EXPATS in the Languedoc

EXPATS PORTRAITS : A NEW EXHIBITION OPENS

A new photographic exhibition, called EXPATS PORTRAITS, showcasing the work of Tony Slaughter who moved to the region six years ago, opens at Le Clap art gallery in Paraza on 5 August 2011.

EXPATS PORTRAITS features 16 people, of varying nationalities, different ages and diverse backgrounds, all of whom have chosen the Languedoc as their new home. Apart from taking their photographs, Tony Slaughter interviewed each subject about their reasons for moving to the region.

Today, the Languedoc-Roussillon has become home to many thousands of men, women and children from every country in Europe – and beyond. Latest available figures show that the population of the Languedoc-Roussillon was 2.58 million at 1 January 2008. In the decade since 1999, the annual population growth of the region averaged 1.3 per cent – twice the average growth for the whole of France.

This virtual population “explosion” is due in no small measure to inward immigration from the rest of France but also from abroad. Stats show that four European countries account for almost three quarters of overseas property owners in the Languedoc. Germany comes top, closely followed by the UK, then Belgium and Switzerland.

But no matter what country they arrived from, each new resident from outside France – an “expat” – has a story to tell. Why? How? When?

Photo-journalist Tony Slaughter said: “I hope to be able to find a patron or sponsor who can help me publish a book with the photographs in this exhibition together with the interviews in full.

“I believe it would make a fascinating social document. And prove the point that every picture does tell a story.”

A number of other artists will also be showing their work at the exhibition at Le Clap art gallery which has the overall title VISAGES MOSAÏQUE. The exhibition opens at 18.30 on Friday 5 August, 2011, and runs until 4 September. The gallery is open between 15.00 and 19.00 Wednesday to Sunday and can be found beside the Canal du Midi, quite close to the Café du Port.

Beauty in the murky waters

I thought I would share a photo of one of my favourite creatures with you.

It’s amazing iridescent colours amongst the murky étang at Gruissan was a beautiful site.

I came across one of my favourite blogs this morning, Art & Tea has been on a meme mission and I have decided to join in. It seems a while since I did one of these! So off we go…..

1. What was I doing 10 years ago?

Wow – 10 years ago I was working at Hatfield High School in Doncaster. I had just been promoted to Head of French and Acting Head of Languages. Jewellery played no part in my life other than what I wore. I lived in my own house in Edenthorpe and had a colourful social life!

2. 5 things on today’s to-do list:

Ironing

Ensuring the notice boards & shelving get finished in the studio

Mopping the floor

Making a to-do desire list of polymer clay

Preparing the marinade for tonight’s bbq

3. Snacks I enjoy:

Worcester sauce crisps

Olives

Tapas

Can I include wine? Lots?

4. Things I’d do if I were a billionnaire!

Not sure – perhaps have a round the world holiday and treat my Nana!

Help out in a local village school in Africa & donate educational material

Buy a Maldivian island

Arrange Polymer Clay Lessons with some of my favourite artists!

5. Places I have lived:

UK – Yorkshire: Huddersfield, Doncaster

France – Paris

France – Aude: Luc-sur-Orbieu

6. Peeps I want to know more about

Now where do I start…..I’m leaving this open to all!

Anyone who would like to play along!

Fish n Chip Special please

As a child I spent many wonderful summer holidays on the north east coast of England at Filey. Now living in France I am unable to visit this lovely fishing village on a regular basis but it still holds a special place in my heart. This photo shows Filey bay at low tide where the rock pools on Filey Brigg are awash with sea life!

Some of the best fish n chips can be had in Filey and of course the only way to eat them is straight from the newspaper! As this video suggests!
